A QUICK REFLECTION ON SCALE

Looking at many student’s works in different places and contexts and discussing the relationship between small working ideas or even finished paintings and larger ones, I found myself reflecting on the issue of scale: a “physical” colour has a perceptual amount of expressiveness/ impact; this amount is not, though, proportionate to its actual size. In other words, if this colour were to be precisely scaled up to a larger size it will not necessarily behave in the same, pictorial, way (pictorial used here to simply mean its functional role within a whole). Therefore it can be concluded that although size is actual scale is perceptual.

This may not be revelatory, but it is important to experience it and ‘get it’ rather than read it, ponder it or merely surmise it.
